McLaren M23B / M23 (1974)
Gordon Coppuck's wedge-shaped M23 borrowed ideas from McLaren's Indianapolis cars and paired them with the ubiquitous Cosworth DFV. It was simple, strong and easy to develop — qualities that kept it competitive for several seasons.
In 1974 Emerson Fittipaldi used it to win McLaren's first drivers' championship, and the team secured its first constructors' title at the same time.
Season in numbers
McLaren raced the M23B and M23 in the 1974 Formula One World Championship, powered by the Ford Cosworth DFV (3.0-litre V8) engine on Goodyear tyres.
The cars were driven by Emerson Fittipaldi, Denny Hulme, Mike Hailwood, David Hobbs, Jochen Mass and Dave Charlton. McLaren started 15 of the season’s 15 races, with four wins, ten podium finishes and two pole positions.
McLaren won the Constructors’ Championship with 73 points, and Emerson Fittipaldi won the Drivers’ Championship.
